Garden garden garden

Another thing we have been doing daily is working in the enormous garden we put in.  

Daddy is already HOT

We had a section of garden we didnt get filled before it was too late to plant, and Matt LOVES to use this as his very own play area. in this picture he has a push horse that hes holding onto as Daddy walks to help me...

this was just from two hills of potatoes we have lots more to harvest, we only dug these to get a lookie at them. and we've had nothing but rain since we dug these so i am certain the rest will be even bigger!

so much variety!

This was what we brought home cabbage, lettuce, onions, peppers, broccoli, cukes, & taters. it was a good day :)

$4 of happiness

I know this post is a bit off topic, Nails resume tomorrow....


I had four dollars. Just four small ones. I needed tomato plants for my garden. Pretty flowers would be bought later because well they are just for pretty and tomatoes you could eat. I went to the local gardening store knowing that tomatoes now would look pretty sad but maybe i could get four plants for my four dollars.

wow nope not at all $6 for over grown leggy tomato plants. not a special price nothing. GRRRR... Lets try something else. there is a small garden store just down the road from me. I got a great deal on briquets last year there and i bought my tomato plants there last year as well... I'll try there. on the way "God let me be able to buy som pretty plants for my porch... I w3as so pretty the year mom filled them all for me!"

When I got there I found...

I was so happy! with my four small ones I was able to buy eight pink begonias, four pink dianthus, and four purple salvia AND my four tomatoe plants i wanted!!!


They may have been a bit on the sad looking side, but with some water and some growing room and a touch of fertilizer they will be beautiful and even though they look sad they have made me so happy!

We go together like peas and carrots!

I couldn't help the "Forest Gump" reference, I always plant my peas and my carrots in the same row. they both like things a bit cooler so I planted them next to the house. If it will be any cooler I have no idea.

In the back in front of the pipe I have two hills of cucumbers, and in the front of that I have peppers.

As you can see when the leaves come out I wont get any sun at noon. But at 4 pm its HOT HOT HOT there. I would much rather have my garden in a place with full sun but there just isn't any area available without having to plant at my mothers house. and who wants to have a garden at someone else's house even if they are next door?

The blue thing in the corner of the picture is a rain barrel that stays full constantly! so I can water my garden out of that. and if its a light rain year I wont have to worry about my well!

No More Perennials

Perennials and bulbs, the best stuff to put in a bed. They come back every year.

Well this bed was over run with bulbs that didnt bloom because they were too thick, and ferns EVERYWHERE that shaded out all of everything. It was just a mess.

Perennials are good, but since I was unable to work this bed the year of my treatment and the year prior to treatment ( I started getting sick a full year before diagnosis) so two years and this bed just went WILD!

NO MORE! we have drug out every living thing out of it. (except for a few stray bulbs that I will have to weed out)

And instead of perennials, I think I will used this for a few vegetables this year.

It felt so good to get my hands back into the dirt! While I was having chemo I was not allowed to garden at all for a few reasons. the chemo I had gave me light sensitivity. More than 10 mins in the direct sun shine, would give me a very bad sunburn ( I saw many people ignore this during my treatment and they suffered from it) and if i had gotten a cut on a finger and not seen it to disinfect it, getting an infection in that cut could have possibly put me in the hospital.

Incidentally, I got three cuts on my finger tips just doing this today.

I do have to say a big thank you to Steve who worked by my side and got his hands dirty to help me get this done. and a big thank you to Michelle for tilling the last 2 rows after it started getting "damp" in the air and I couldn't breathe well enough to continue.
